About Today’s Message:
Series: David: Turning Points | Lesson 5: Releasing Resentment
Sermon Title: Releasing Resentment
Speaker: Pastor Jamie Allen
Text: Job 5:2
Date: August 31, 2025
Do you really mean it when you pray, “God, forgive my sins as I forgive those who sin against me”? What about when it comes to your ex-spouse, the relative who cheated you, or the employee who betrayed your trust?
Resentment is understandable when we’ve been hurt deeply, but it is also dangerous—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The Bible warns:
“Resentment destroys the fool” (Job 5:2)
“Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you” (Hebrews 12:15)
Today’s lesson wraps up our series on turning points in the life of King David. Through David’s encounters with a man named Shimei, we discover powerful lessons about forgiveness:
David refuses to strike back.
David chooses to forgive.
But later, David struggles with resentment—showing us that forgiveness is not a one-time act, but a continual process.
Forgiveness is not about excusing wrongs—it’s about releasing the poison of bitterness so it doesn’t destroy you. Jesus calls us to forgive as we’ve been forgiven, even when it feels impossible.
📖 Key Scriptures:
Old Testament – David & Shimei
2 Samuel 16:5–13 – Shimei curses and throws stones at David, but David refuses to strike back.
2 Samuel 19:16–23 – David shows grace and forgives Shimei after being restored as king.
1 Kings 2:8–10 – Near his death, David tells Solomon to deal with Shimei, showing the lingering struggle with resentment.
Wisdom & Warnings
Job 5:2 – “Resentment destroys the fool.”
Job 36:13 – “The godless are full of resentment.”
Hebrews 12:15 – “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.”
Forgiveness & Grace
Colossians 3:13 – “Forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
Ephesians 4:26–27, 32 – Don’t let anger control you; forgive one another as God forgave you in Christ.
Romans 12:17–20 – Don’t take revenge; overcome evil with good, showing kindness even to your enemies.
🙏 Join us as we learn how to release resentment, forgive as Christ forgives us, and walk in freedom.
