Lesson #2 Examining Jesus' Head

In our second message from the 4H – Living Like Jesus series, Pastor Jamie Allen turned our focus to Jesus’ head—His mindset, His motives, and His model of leadership.

Big Idea: Jesus was the perfect leader with perfect motives. His leadership motive was to make a positive difference.

We often talk about having the heart of Jesus, but what about His head—the way He thought, what drove His decisions, and how He led people? In Mark 10:35–45, two of Jesus' closest followers, James and John, boldly ask Him for positions of honor in His coming Kingdom. They weren’t seeking responsibility—they were seeking recognition. Their motives revealed a mindset rooted in status, not service.

But Jesus flips the script. He explains that greatness in His Kingdom doesn't come from climbing to the top; it comes from kneeling to serve. Leadership in God's eyes is not about power or praise—it’s about sacrifice.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45

This powerful verse reveals the motive behind every decision Jesus made. His leadership was never about position—it was about purpose. And He invites us to follow Him in that same way.

Three Truths We Can Learn from Jesus' Head:

  1. Check your motives. Are you leading for applause or to make a difference?

  2. Service is the highest calling. True greatness is measured in humility.

  3. Follow the example of Jesus. He led with love, not ego.

As we continue our 4H journey—Heart, Head, Hands, and Habits—this week we ask: Do I have the head of Jesus? Am I thinking like Him, leading like Him, and serving like Him?

📅 Join us next week for Lesson #3 – “Jesus’ Hands” as we keep exploring what it means to live like Jesus from the inside out.

Let’s grow together!

Two motives behind the desire to lead...

1 People want to lead to make a positive difference.

2 People want to lead to be important.

' And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” ' Mark 10:35-40

Two principles Jesus taught about the desire to lead...

1 Leadership is almost always a lot tougher than we think it will be.

'saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.” ' Mark 10:33-34 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.10.33-34

2 Leadership is a God-Ordained call.

'When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. ' Proverbs 29:2 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/PRO.29.2

'And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ' Mark 10:41-45 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.10.41-45

Christian leadership is counter-culture.

' And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. ' Mark 10:13-16 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.10.13-16

'And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. ' Mark 10:21-22 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.10.21-22

' And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.' Mark 10:46-52 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.10.46-52

' One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. '

Proverbs 29:23 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/PRO.29.23

' Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, ' 1 Peter 5:6 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/1PE.5.6

'Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, ' Philippians 2:3-5 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/PHP.2.3-5

'And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ' Philippians 2:8-11 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/PHP.2.8-11
