Jesus’ Heart: A Model for Us All

Lesson #1 – April 27, 2025

Main Text: Mark 6:31–44

Today we kicked off a powerful new series with a message called "Jesus’ Heart."

Our focus was on Mark 6:31–44, where we see one of the clearest pictures of Jesus' deep compassion, love, and leadership.

The Big Idea:

Jesus is the perfect example of the kind of heart we need.

In a world that often celebrates strength, status, and success, Jesus shows us that the most important quality for living like Him is having a giant heart — one that's bigger on the inside than it might appear on the outside.

In Mark 6, we find Jesus surrounded by crowds of needy people. Even though He and His disciples were exhausted and looking for rest, Jesus wasn't annoyed or dismissive. Instead, His heart moved Him to action. He saw the people as "sheep without a shepherd," and He fed them — not just spiritually, but physically as well, performing the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand.

Key Takeaways from Today’s Message:

Compassion comes first. Jesus wasn’t focused on Himself, even when He was tired. His compassion drove His leadership.

A leader’s heart matters more than their title. Jesus led because He loved, not because He demanded authority.

We are called to grow hearts like His. Living like Jesus starts by letting our hearts be stretched to care, serve, and lead others selflessly.

As we move forward in this series, we are invited to examine our own hearts.

Are we cultivating a heart like Jesus? Are we willing to love even when it’s inconvenient? Are we ready to serve even when it’s hard?

Let’s start by asking God to enlarge our hearts — not for our sake, but for the sake of others, just like Jesus did.

Join us next Sunday, May 4, 2025, for Lesson #2 – "Jesus’ Head"

📖 Main Text: Mark 10:35–45

As we continue our series, we'll explore how Jesus' way of thinking shaped His leadership. While His friends often chased position and status, Jesus showed us that true leadership comes from a heart — and a head — committed to making a difference.

Come discover what it means to think like Jesus and lead with the right motives.

Let’s grow together!

VIEW NOTES

Jesus' heart was a servant heart.

'And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. ' Mark 6:31-32

To live like Jesus, we must live from the inside out.

Jesus' heart was a compassionate heart.

'Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. ' Mark 6:33-34

To live like Jesus, we must have compassion for people.

'Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; ' 1 Corinthians 13:5

'Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ' Philippians 2:3-4

Jesus' heart was a servant's heart.

'And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. ' Mark 6:35-44

To live like Jesus, we must look to serve, not to be served.

'even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ' Matthew 20:28 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.20.28

' Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. ' Proverbs 16:18

'Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” ' John 6:68-69

To live like Jesus, we must meet more than physical needs.

'For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. ' Hebrews 4:15

' From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” ' Matthew 4:17

'And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. ' Mark 16:15-16

https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.16.15-16

'But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ' Matthew 4:4

'Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. ' John 6:35

'But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
