OVERVIEW

Revelation 1:4–20

Pastor Rick Cunningham

Pastor Rick Cunningham teaches from Revelation 1:4–20, reminding the church that while the kingdoms of this world rise and fall, God’s Kingdom and the church of Jesus Christ endure forever. Throughout history, governments and empires collapse, yet the church continues to stand because it belongs to God.

John writes Revelation while exiled on the island of Patmos because of his faith in Jesus. The message he receives is meant to encourage believers who face pressure, persecution, and temptation to compromise their allegiance to Christ.

In this passage, Jesus is revealed in powerful ways:

  • Jesus is the same God who acts throughout history, the faithful covenant God who continues to work on behalf of His people.

  • Revelation is God’s message to His church, reminding believers that God is still speaking and guiding His people today.

  • Jesus is the divine warrior, priest, and judge, whose eternal kingdom cannot be destroyed by any earthly power.

  • Jesus holds authority over death and the powers of this world, assuring believers that even in tribulation, they have victory in Him.

John’s vision of Jesus standing among the lampstands shows that Christ is present with His church and holds it in His hand. Because of this, believers can face the future without fear.

The message challenges believers to consider where their ultimate allegiance lies. Christians are called not to place their hope in political systems or earthly kingdoms, but in the eternal Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

No matter what pressures or opposition the church faces, the promise remains true: Jesus is with His church, and His Kingdom will never end.
