Uncover the story of Rahab in Joshua 2, as Pastor John Blackmore explores her pivotal role in the Bible. How does her story relate to us today?

'Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” '

(0:08) Clock on them. (0:33) We have the great pleasure this morning of meeting some new friends from Sullivan, Missouri. (0:41) John and Laura Blackmore are here to witness.

(0:44) John has been Senior Pastor at Sullivan Christian Church, is that correct? (0:48) And very active in some out of the country mission projects. (0:56) There you go. (1:09) We'll see how much of a plaque I'm going to have done.

(1:13) I was going to say, I got to meet a lot of folks from Ashland here about 9 o'clock, (1:21) but we actually met our first person from Ashland about 8.25 down on Interstate 72 there. (1:30) He was a state trooper. (1:35) Fortunately, he came to my wife's side, she's prettier than me.

(1:38) And he said, hey, you're going a little fast here. (1:41) I said, yeah, I'm running a little late. (1:43) I'm going to preach at Ashland Church of Christ.

(1:45) He goes, oh, I'm from Ashland. (1:47) So anyway, it all worked out. (1:51) Oh, yeah, yeah.

(1:54) There won't be any additional fees for 3G here. (1:58) Keeny is his last name? (2:00) Jacob. (2:01) Jacob.

(2:01) You tell Jacob thanks and he's got a free front row seat. (2:07) Real nice gentleman. (2:08) So I was like, anyway.

(2:10) But it's kind of a joke. (2:12) I grew up in Illinois. (2:13) Laura grew up in Litchfield, Illinois, not far from here.

(2:17) And we went to St. Louis Christian College and met a bunch of guys from Missouri when I was at St. Louis Christian College. (2:25) And we always tell them how much better Illinois is than Missouri. (2:29) But man, I'll tell you what, Missouri is beautiful and they don't have a straight road in the state.

(2:34) So that's why when we come up here, it's like, why waste this straight drive? (2:39) So we didn't realize we were doing that much. (2:41) But we got here and all is good. (2:43) So I appreciate it.

(2:44) And I don't know exactly. (2:48) I was planning on preaching this Sunday. (2:51) And then I talked to Garrett.

(2:52) They said, hey, we had some options. (2:54) I went in my room. (2:55) I said, Laura.

(2:56) I said, she's a CFO. (2:58) She's a social planner and everything. (2:59) I think we can make it up there this weekend.

(3:01) And she said, yeah. (3:03) So then we talked about what to preach. (3:05) And then I even sent over Ephesians 4, 1 to 16.

(3:11) But, and I rarely do this. (3:13) My wife can tell you that. (3:15) I rarely do this.

(3:16) About two or three times in preaching, I just felt like, man, I need to share something else with you. (3:21) And maybe something you can remember a little bit and hopefully put into practice and you can teach your kids. (3:27) I was kind of hoping the kids would stay in.

(3:29) But we'll just all act like we're young kids. (3:31) Because usually when you tell the story with a bunch of kids in the room. (3:36) I could go get them.

(3:38) That's all right. (3:39) That's what you want to do. (3:41) You tell it to the kids and you can just have fun with it.

(3:45) But actually, the adults are getting it too. (3:49) But, you know, so let's just all act like we're kids today. (3:51) I want you to, I'm going to switch it.

(3:53) And the reason I switch it, I was sitting here thinking about it. (3:55) We prayed about it at Sunday school. (3:57) It's on my mind.

(3:59) Laura and I have been married. (4:01) This coming year will be our 40th year of marriage. (4:05) So, I was like, yep.

(4:09) I was six and she was five. (4:13) It's hard for us to believe that. (4:15) We have two sons.

(4:16) Our oldest son lives in Sullivan. (4:18) He went to Liberty University, married a girl from Virginia. (4:21) Was living in D.C. and decided with all the chaos, and that's going to be a key word today.

(4:27) With all the chaos a couple years ago, they decided to move back to the Midwest. (4:34) And so we're blessed. (4:35) They're living in town with us there.

(4:37) And then I have another son who's actually preaching this morning in a little church. (4:42) He went to Mulberry Christian College, graduated last year. (4:46) And so he's preaching in a small church.

(4:48) So we're really blessed. (4:51) And, but I always joke, I'm one of those old guys now, telling all these young people at Lowe's and wherever I go, (4:57) like, boy, I wish I was growing up in America. (4:59) You know, you know, things are changing.

(5:03) Does anybody feel like we're just kind of in a little bit of chaos? (5:07) Does that bother any of you? (5:09) Yeah. (5:10) So, so in thinking about that, my wife is now teaching a lady's Bible study on Thursday. (5:17) And she discovered one of the extraordinary ladies of the Old Testament named Rahab.

(5:23) And it reminded me years and years ago at a camp, at a Christian camp, I was a Thursday night speaker. (5:33) And I didn't know what I was going to preach. (5:35) And I just started reading a little bit out of Joshua, read a little bit about Rahab.

(5:40) And I want to share that with you. (5:42) Laura says, do you have any notes? (5:44) And I said, right here. (5:47) So we'll have to go.

(5:48) It might be a little rusty. (5:49) But I do want you to determine your Bibles, if you have your Bibles. (5:52) And I want to thank you for getting your visions ready.

(5:55) If they ever come back, it's huge. (5:59) We'll do that. (6:00) But I want you to turn to Joshua chapter 2. (6:05) And most of us, if you've grown up and you've done your good Sunday school, you'll know the story.

(6:09) But let me set the stage a little bit. (6:13) Joshua had just become the leader of Israel. (6:18) Okay.

(6:19) Now, God had made his promise to Abraham. (6:22) Abraham, I'm going to make you a great man. (6:25) Your name will be great.

(6:27) You will be the father of a great nation. (6:29) And all the nations of the earth will be blessed through you. (6:32) That's Genesis chapter 12, verses 1 to 3. (6:36) And that was a promise that through the seed of Abraham, all the nations would be blessed.

(6:42) Now, when we look back and see, through Jesus Christ, now all the nations are blessed. (6:47) Right? (6:47) That was a promise to him. (6:49) But he told Abraham at that time, your descendants will be taken away and they will be in bondage in Egypt.

(6:55) And we know that story. (6:56) You know, Joseph went down first and then eventually the whole family ended up in Egypt. (7:02) When they arrived, Joseph was second in control of Egypt and everything was fine.

(7:06) But it says, a Pharaoh rose up that did not know Joseph. (7:09) And then they put all the Israelites into slavery as foreigners to control them. (7:17) And the people finally began to cry out to God.

(7:20) And it says in Exodus chapter 3 that God visited this guy named Moses who had already killed his Egyptian and then had fled to the desert and lived 40 years in the desert. (7:30) God says, I have heard the crying to my people. (7:34) And if there's one thing I want you to remember about anything I say today is God hears your cries.

(7:43) They didn't know how to pray. (7:45) They didn't pray the right prayers. (7:46) They certainly will see these people all dying in the desert because they weren't very faithful.

(7:52) But God heard their cries. (7:53) And he says, I'll send you, Moses, to deliver my people. (7:57) Moses delivers them.

(7:58) We know the ten plagues and it was about a three-week trip to the promised land. (8:03) But it took him 40 years because of their disobedience. (8:08) Moses, even in that time, kind of had some pride, anger, and he only got to see the promised land.

(8:15) He didn't even get to go in. (8:18) But now the story is set that Joshua takes over. (8:24) Joshua is the only one, him and Caleb, that were over the age of 40 that were able to go in the promised land.

(8:30) And he is now the leader. (8:33) And they are getting ready to start the whole next stage of God's plan for redemption of the world. (8:39) And that is taking in the promised land.

(8:42) And we're going to see here this story, which we might know pretty well. (8:45) But I just want to point out one little thing in this story. (8:48) In Joshua chapter 2, as they have already now approached the promised land, (8:54) Israel had a couple great victories over some different kings.

(9:00) And they were on the edge. (9:02) And everybody in the promised land, the Canaanites and all the other ites, (9:06) they were scared to death of this people they had heard of. (9:10) They had heard about that.

(9:11) And we're going to read that. (9:12) Because Joshua says, okay, we remember Moses had sent 12 spies. (9:19) Remember? (9:19) Ten were bad and two were good.

(9:21) If you know that little camp song. (9:23) And they came back and they said, we can't take the land. (9:26) The people are too big.

(9:26) The cities are too strong. (9:28) And because of that is why they spent 40 years in the desert. (9:31) Now Joshua had learned something about leadership.

(9:35) Don't form a committee. (9:38) Okay? (9:39) Because Joshua didn't send 12. (9:42) He only sends two.

(9:43) And he goes, go spy out Jericho. (9:46) It's the biggest, baddest, most walled, most protected city. (9:49) Go spy it out.

(9:51) And he goes, guess what? (9:52) We're not going to take a congregational vote whether we go into the promised land or not. (9:56) Okay? (9:57) So this is the occasion. (9:59) The two spies are charged with going in, little reconnaissance.

(10:03) That's my French word for you. (10:05) Okay? (10:05) Yeah. (10:05) We were talking about we speak a little bit of French.

(10:08) But anyway, they went in. (10:12) And where do you go in a city if you don't want to get noticed? (10:15) You go to the worst part of the city. (10:18) So they end up at this lady's house named Rahab who is a prostitute.

(10:23) So let's read chapter 2. (10:24) I want you to pay attention to a few things that hit me years ago and still hit me when I read this passage. (10:31) Then Joshua, the son of Nun, secretly sent two spies. (10:36) Go, look over the land, he said, especially Jericho.

(10:40) So they went and they entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and they stayed there. (10:45) Okay? (10:46) The king of Jericho told them, look, some of the Israelites have come here to spy out the land. (10:52) So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab.

(10:57) Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house because they have come to spy out the whole land. (11:04) But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them and she said, yes, the men came. (11:09) But I do not know where they come from.

(11:12) At dusk, when it was time to close the city gates, the men left. (11:18) Okay, this is one reason you should always be extremely confident in the word of God. (11:26) It is so authentic.

(11:29) This woman just lied. (11:31) Now, don't let your kids tell you, oh, this tells us we can lie because it's in the Bible. (11:36) The Bible is just describing a reality here that this woman had just lied.

(11:40) She said the men had left me when they had. (11:43) But lying probably wasn't on the top ten list of Rahab's sins, okay? (11:48) Especially in her culture. (11:49) She lived, get it? (11:51) She lived in a time of chaos.

(11:54) She lived in a time of fear. (11:57) She lived in a time when her people didn't know what direction to turn. (12:02) Does that sound maybe a little bit familiar? (12:07) Okay.

(12:08) And we're going to see it's God's people that deliver it. (12:13) We are God's people. (12:14) The church are the ones to deliver this land.

(12:18) Okay, let's look. (12:21) So, but she had taken them up to the road and hidden them under some stalks and flags that she had laid down on the road. (12:28) So the men set out, the people that came to collect the two spies.

(12:32) They set out, pursuing the spies on the road that leads to the forts of the Jordan. (12:36) And as soon as the pursuers were gone, the gate was shut. (12:40) Before the spies laid down for the night, she went up to the road and said to them.

(12:45) Now, listen, this is important. (12:46) There's a couple. (12:47) I'll give you a little Bible study here, okay? (12:50) I know that the Lord.

(12:51) Now, if you're looking at your text, if you're looking at that, the word Lord there is in small capital letters. (12:58) Everybody see that? (13:00) When it's always printed like that in the Old Testament, the original Hebrew word there is the name for God is Yahweh. (13:07) Okay? (13:08) It's not Lord.

(13:09) This is simply the word Lord. (13:11) It's the word, the name of God, the name given to Moses. (13:14) I am that I am will send you.

(13:16) Okay? (13:17) So it says, Yahweh has given this land to you. (13:20) And there is a great fear of you that has fallen on us, so that all who live in this land are melting in fear because of you. (13:29) We have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea for when you came out of Egypt.

(13:35) And what you did to Shihon of the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. (13:42) We heard of it. (13:45) Now, who's the we she's talking about? (13:48) Citizens of Jericho.

(13:50) Everybody's afraid. (13:51) Everybody doesn't know which way they're going to turn they feel like. (13:54) And the Bible tells us, Abraham, the reason, I'm going to go back here, but just stick with me.

(14:01) The reason he gave them 400 years to these people is because their sin had not reached the maximum. (14:08) But when there was going to be no one else in that culture, no one else in that time that was going to return to God, God's judgment comes. (14:19) And Abraham and everybody else knew that something is happening.

(14:25) There are these people that serve this God named Yahweh, and they always win. (14:33) Someone and something different is happening. (14:35) It says our hearts are afraid.

(14:37) OK, but they're in this big, big city. (14:39) OK, where's the letter? (14:42) When we heard it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed because the Lord, your God in heaven above and on earth below. (14:50) Now, then, please swear to me by Yahweh that you will show kindness to my family.

(14:58) And if you believe in Mark and in your Bibles, you need to underline the word kindness. (15:02) The word kindness in the Hebrew is the word hesed. (15:05) Everybody say hesed.

(15:07) OK, very good. (15:08) The word hesed is a word that we would translate grace, unveiling love, mercy, kindness. (15:17) So what is Rahab asking for? (15:20) We're new Sunday school here, OK? (15:22) What is she asking for? (15:23) She's asking for God's grace.

(15:26) Because she knows we're done for. (15:30) Give this your sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death. (15:40) And the spy said, verse 14, our lives are your lives.

(15:44) The men assured her. (15:45) If you do not tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us this land. (15:54) I just kind of wish the church had that much confidence.

(15:58) There's two spies that have barely escaped death, and they know God's going to give us this land. (16:03) They believe they have faith in their God. (16:07) Do we have that faith? (16:10) Do we really believe the promises of Scripture, the church is going to be triumphant? (16:15) The church is going to win? (16:16) Are we, do we just act the same as everybody else that's watching Fox News? (16:21) Just scared to death, and we're wringing our hands that it's going to be the end of the world.

(16:25) It's not going to be the end of the world. (16:28) That very well could be the end of America, and that might scare us. (16:33) Hey dudes, dudes and dudettes, okay? (16:37) Listen, it happens.

(16:39) It's not the end of the world. (16:41) Because there's something more important than being an American, that's being a follower of Jesus Christ. (16:48) We have to understand that.

(16:49) That is the kingdom that is going to win. (16:53) Not the stars and stripes. (16:56) And we have to be more faithful to our king than to our president.

(17:00) We have to have more faith that God's word is the word, not just the Constitution. (17:05) Go start the car. (17:10) All right, all right.

(17:12) I'll send you the notes on it. (17:15) But we got to understand, listen to what he said, verse 15. (17:20) So she let down, they said, hey, we'll make this deal, you save our lives, we'll save your life.

(17:26) So verse 15, this is important. (17:28) So she let them down by a road through the window. (17:32) For the house she lived in was part of the city wall.

(17:39) Okay, now we're going to stop there. (17:41) We're going to pick up the story in a minute. (17:42) A couple things just from this verse.

(17:45) Ray Haddon had no idea how to pray. (17:49) She had no idea about the Ten Commandments. (17:52) She had no idea, all she knew, that there are these people, that their God is a real God.

(17:58) She made a confession of faith. (18:00) She says, your God, Yahweh, is the God of heaven and earth. (18:05) Now for a pagan woman who lived in a time when there was all kinds of, there's gods of heaven, there's gods of creeps, there's gods of fertility, there's gods of crops.

(18:16) There were all these other things she could have worshipped. (18:19) And she made a proclamation that the real God is not those gods. (18:26) The real God is there's one true God who is over all, over everything.

(18:31) And she made the confession that is Yahweh. (18:35) She didn't know any of the rules. (18:37) She didn't know how to stand up and sit down in church.

(18:39) She didn't know whether you take communion together or you take it when it's passed. (18:43) She didn't know all those things. (18:44) She'd probably been a little shabby if she walked in here this morning.

(18:47) Because she was what? (18:53) You know what? (18:54) She made a choice there to go against everything she had learned. (18:59) And put her faith in the one true living God. (19:03) And that she asked for grace.

(19:08) And you know they did say, now listen, you're going to come to synagogue school. (19:11) You're going to learn the Ten Commandments. (19:13) And later on we're going to have about 614 other commandments.

(19:16) Okay, we're going to teach you how to do all these things. (19:19) And you'll learn that God's people will fight over pews and chairs. (19:23) And they'll fight over worship music.

(19:24) And they'll fight over whether women serve communion or not. (19:28) You know, you've been there. (19:33) It was very simple.

(19:35) And I just pray to God. (19:38) Sincerely, the church can return to simply understanding God's in charge of everything. (19:48) It's not that difficult.

(19:49) Because the Rayhats that live in Ashland are looking for something that real. (19:55) They're looking for a people that when they hear about us, (19:58) they hear about the miracles God does through us. (20:03) They see the transformed lives.

(20:05) Because see, what brought her to faith was the witness of God's people. (20:12) Not an incredible preacher. (20:15) Not an incredible worship service.

(20:17) Not all kinds of church programs. (20:19) What brought her to faith was seeing there was something different about these people. (20:23) And the one thing the church has lost in America is the fact that it's about us living victorious lives in a chaos of culture.

(20:33) But we join in the chaos of culture. (20:36) But we go to church on Sunday. (20:39) That doesn't do it.

(20:40) So here it is. (20:41) Now here's the last thing. (20:42) Verse 15.

(20:43) You can look at it. (20:44) She let them down from a rope from her window because of hunger. (20:49) Where was her house? (20:51) On the wall.

(20:52) All right. (20:53) Let's try that because that's going to come back into play. (20:55) And I think some of you who know a little bit or saw the movie on Netflix.

(21:00) Okay. (21:02) Where was her house? (21:03) Say on the wall. (21:04) On the wall.

(21:05) Her house was on the wall. (21:06) Okay. (21:07) Now let's step forward.

(21:08) Now the spies knew they were going to take the city. (21:10) It's important in chapter 3, 4, and 5, the game plans given to Joshua. (21:16) These guys didn't know.

(21:17) They thought, oh, the best thing to do is we'll probably burn down the gate. (21:20) We'll probably come in, slaughter the city. (21:23) Everybody in the streets will kill.

(21:25) She'll be safe because her house is on the wall. (21:28) Turn over to chapter 6. (21:31) How many of you know what happened to the walls of Jericho? (21:35) Okay. (21:35) Where was her house? (21:36) On the wall.

(21:37) You're getting better. (21:38) Okay. (21:39) Let's take a look.

(21:40) See if the kids would get into this. (21:42) All right. (21:43) So anyway, some time passes.

(21:46) They're given the battle plan. (21:47) They cross the river. (21:48) Now you don't think Jericho had heard about this because they were right close to the River Jordan (21:54) and the same miracle that brought them out of Egypt brought them into the Promised Land (21:59) because the priests went into the Jordan River.

(22:02) The Bible tells us it was at flood stage. (22:04) So they weren't having a drought. (22:07) It was at flood stage.

(22:08) They went in with the ark, and what happened? (22:10) It says the river backed up, and they walked across into the Promised Land. (22:16) Now what do you think the people of Jericho were saying? (22:20) If they weren't afraid yet, now those undecided, okay, they were fearful. (22:29) Let's read a little bit here.

(22:31) Chapter 6, verse 1. (22:33) Now Jericho was tightly shut out because of the Israelites. (22:37) No one went in or out. (22:39) No one came in.

(22:40) Then the Lord said to Joshua, See, I have delivered Jericho in your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. (22:49) And then we know the story. (22:51) He says, Go, and here's what you're going to do.

(22:54) Great battle plan. (22:56) You guys better be quiet. (22:59) And I think we missed that too.

(23:01) If you read through there, and I'm not going to read it for the sake of time because we have pop-up here. (23:05) I heard a crop pop-up. (23:08) Okay.

(23:10) It says, You march around the city with the ark in front of you, with the presence of God before you. (23:18) And then he said this, Do not talk. (23:22) Okay? (23:23) A whole lap, then you go home.

(23:27) You do that day two. (23:28) Don't talk. (23:29) Be quiet.

(23:30) Go home. (23:32) And do that day three, day four, day five, day six. (23:37) Then he said on day seven, you're going to walk around seven times.

(23:42) Then when you hear the signal, you guys blast the trumpets and you scream. (23:48) Okay? (23:48) And we all know what happened, right? (23:52) Let's skip ahead here. (23:53) Verse 23.

(23:55) When the trumpets sounded and the people shouted at the sound of the trumpet and the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed. (24:02) Where was Rahab's house? (24:03) On the wall. (24:05) What collapsed? (24:06) The wall.

(24:09) Let me ask the third question. (24:11) What's the dumbest thing you can do if you're in a house that's on the wall and the wall's falling down? (24:19) What's the dumbest thing you can do? (24:20) Stay in the house. (24:21) Stay in the house.

(24:22) That's what God told her to do. (24:25) You got it. (24:26) See, Betty, you got it.

(24:26) I'm going to tell it. (24:27) I'm going to tell it to you today. (24:28) You were laughing at church.

(24:29) All right. (24:31) That's how we got here. (24:32) I know Dave a little bit.

(24:33) All right. (24:35) What's the dumbest thing you can do in a house that's on a wall and the wall's caving in? (24:40) Stay in the house. (24:41) God told her to stay in the house.

(24:44) She had a huge choice. (24:47) Am I going to follow my instincts? (24:53) Am I going to do what I think is best to save myself? (24:56) Or am I going to trust in God, even if I'm in a house that's on the wall that is collapsing? (25:06) That's a question before every one of us. (25:08) Because Rahab, we notice and we will see, Rahab wasn't just talking about her own salvation.

(25:13) Who did she bring into her house? (25:15) Her mom, her dad, her brothers, her sisters, the families, the nieces and nephews. (25:20) She put not only her life, but the life of everyone she knew and held dear in jeopardy by obeying God. (25:32) I think the time has come for all of us to understand this, that when God says it, we believe it and we follow it.

(25:41) Because there was probably thousands of voices telling Rahab, get out. (25:46) Everybody else said, hey, the wall, my house is crumbling. (25:49) I'm getting out.

(25:50) I'm going to save myself. (25:52) I've got at least a biting chance if I'm on the town square. (25:56) But it's death for certain if you're in a stone house and it's falling down.

(26:00) Let's go ahead and just read a little bit more. (26:03) They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed by sword everything living in it, men, women, young, old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. (26:12) Joshua said to the two men that had spied out the land, go to the prostitute's house and bring her out and all who belong to her according to your oath to her.

(26:27) So the young men went and had done – so the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all who belong to her. (26:41) They brought her out, the entire family, and they put them in a place outside the capital of Israel. (26:47) I don't know.

(26:48) I just wish sometimes there was – they had some sort of camera to film this. (26:52) But in my mind's eye, can you imagine the scene of that wall coming down and people screaming in terror? (27:04) And then all of a sudden out of the dust of this wall falling down, you hear swords. (27:09) You see men crawling over.

(27:11) You see an army coming in, swords drawn, ready to put to death everybody in the city. (27:18) God's judgment had come. (27:21) And everybody that had just been crying, Rahab, get out of here.

(27:24) You might save yourself. (27:25) We're now being slaughtered. (27:27) And then Joshua says, guys, go to the house.

(27:30) Here's a moment of truth. (27:33) Did Rahab obey? (27:38) Rahab, are you in there? (27:40) And they see the door creak open. (27:43) And she walks out.

(27:47) Why? (27:48) Because she had faith in Yahweh, the true God of heaven and earth. (27:54) She wasn't dismayed by everybody else. (27:57) She wasn't following the crowd.

(27:59) She wasn't trying to halfway do things. (28:02) She knew that God promised me and by faith believed in Yahweh. (28:09) By faith, she stayed in the house.

(28:13) And that's the question for all of us today. (28:16) Are we going to stay in the house? (28:19) Because it's difficult sometimes. (28:22) It's difficult when the world's telling us this.

(28:25) Your kids are learning something different. (28:27) You've learned something different. (28:30) Sometimes staying in the house sounds like the dumbest thing to do.

(28:34) Just like the dumbest thing to do is to stay in a house that's on the wall with the wall falling down. (28:40) But see, we have to make that choice what we're going to do. (28:42) And it says there from that point forward that Rahab lived in the camp of Israel.

(28:50) But that's not the end of the story. (28:53) Some of you know the end of the story? (28:54) The end of the story starts in the beginning of the New Testament. (28:58) Turn over and we'll just kind of close with this right here.

(29:01) I'll give you a challenge today. (29:05) Matthew chapter 1. (29:08) Go ahead and read a few verses of this. (29:09) I was really afraid when I came in here.

(29:17) I thought these lights were very bright. (29:18) You moved them up for the preachers. (29:20) I appreciate that.

(29:24) Matthew chapter 1. (29:25) Gospel of Matthew written to Jews. (29:28) The first thing a Jewish person had to learn about the history of Jesus was he was the anointed Messiah. (29:35) Because the Messiah was going to be a son of David.

(29:37) And you can't be telling me this Jesus of Nazareth is this Messiah unless you can prove to me we can trace him back to King David. (29:45) Okay? (29:46) So that's very important. (29:47) So that's why the Gospel of Matthew, it's kind of hard names and we might wonder why.

(29:52) This was very important for any Jewish person to accept Jesus as the anointed Messiah, the promised Messiah.
