OVERVIEW

Not Just a King

Message by Pastor Collin Brennan

Luke 19:32-44

On this Palm Sunday message, Pastor Collin Brennan challenged us with a powerful question: Are we here just to see Jesus—or are we ready to follow Him?

As Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowd celebrated Him as King. They laid down cloaks, praised His miracles, and welcomed Him with joy. Yet many of those same people misunderstood who He truly was. They were looking for a political savior—a conquering king on a warhorse—not a humble Lord who would go to the cross.

Jesus intentionally entered on a donkey, fulfilling prophecy and revealing the nature of His kingdom: one marked by humility, surrender, and transformation—not power and status.

But even as the crowds praised Him, Jesus wept over Jerusalem. He saw what others could not—the hardened hearts that would soon reject Him. Though He stood right in front of them, they missed Him. They wanted what He could do for them, but not who He truly was.

This moment reveals a sobering truth: It is possible to be close to Jesus—and still miss Him.

The message calls us to examine our own hearts:

  • Are we looking for a “warhorse” Jesus to fix our problems, or are we surrendering to the King on the cross?

  • Are we laying down temporary “cloaks” (outward actions), or are we laying down our lives?

  • Do we see what we have as ours—or as something entrusted to us by the Lord?

The crowd praised Him as King, but many did not follow Him as Lord. Their expectations shaped their response—and when Jesus didn’t meet those expectations, their praise faded.

The same danger exists today.

Following Jesus isn’t about convenience or appearance—it’s about surrender. He doesn’t want our things; He wants a relationship with us. He isn’t just our Savior—He must also be our Lord.

As we move toward Resurrection Sunday, this is a time to reflect deeply:

Have we truly surrendered to Jesus—or have we only admired Him from a distance?

They saw Him… and still missed Him. Don’t let that be us.
